52 Patterns in 2015: Week 5

I’m keeping it simple this week, with these little plus signs. As much as I admire patterns with lots of colors and layered motifs, my heart really belongs to simple things like this. I loooovee plus sign motifs, like this set of bed sheets from Schoolhouse Electric, oh and also this coordinating blanket. When it comes to design, I really gravitate to a less is more aesthetic. I love patterns that use simple motifs, are geometric, and make great use of just a few colors. I’ve been a huge fan of the work of Skinny LaMinx and Lotta Jansdotter for years now, and I want to bring some of that feel into my own designs, but still incorporate the more intricate geometrics of my line work. In other words, don’t expect a lot of florals from me any time soon.

To create this pattern I simply gridded out my dartboard in Illustrator and then drew each + with my Wacom tablet. It was good practice as I’m still getting the hang of drawing while looking at a computer screen. I absolutely love this one because it feels very me. I simultaneously want to make throw pillows and dresses out of this, though probably at different scales. With that in mind, I’m in the process of making this pattern available on Spoonflower. I’m waiting on some test swatches to make sure I’ve got it just so, and also working on a couple different color options. I’ll let you know when it’s available.
