52 Patterns in 2015!

Back in the early fall I came across a post on Lisa Condon’s blog about Pattern Camp by Jessica Swift. I clicked over, watched the video and thought, “Oh that looks cool, but I probably won’t do it.” I though of several excuses, price, time, we’d be out of town that weekend, and sort of set it to the back of my mind for a couple days. But I kept thinking about it, and by the end of the week I signed up. You know what, I AM SO GLAD I DID! Pattern Camp proved to be one of the big highlights of 2014 for me. Does that sound lame? Are you sitting there thinking “Gee, Stephanie, an online workshop was the highlight of the year? Maybe you should get out more…” But truly it was, and I can’t say enough good things about it. Not only did I learn how to create patterns out of my sketches and paintings, but I also got a crash course in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, and I have so much more confidence now when I use those programs beyond just digital pattern making. I feel so inspired and energized to make, create, and play with color, texture, and pattern.
Week 1: Anchors
Since my life has suddenly become a buzz with patterns, I’ve decided for 2015 to embark on a new project. 52 Patterns for 2015! Each week (usually Fridays), I’ll be sharing a new digital pattern and sharing my process from sketches to color palettes to finished works. I am so excited about this project and think I’ll probably end up with more than 52 patterns.
Week 1: Anchors
This anchor sketch is one I started a couple weeks ago. I love nautical themes, and I think line work on an anchor are a natural fit, it reminds me of a fouled rope or chain. aWhen I first thought about turning this sketch into a pattern, I was planning on keeping the colors super traditional, just navy and gold, but as I worked with it more I like the lighter feel that the background and off-white bring in. I’m definitely thinking about having this one made into a large print for cubby’s room.

If you’re interested in Pattern Camp, the next session is 7-8 February, and registration starts tomorrow! You’ll get two days of videos and live chats with Jessica, and then access to the classroom for a month afterward to practice. You’ll also get to come hang out with me and other talented pattern makers in the Facebook group where you can share your work and get lots of support and help. Jessica is an amazing, patient, and encouraging teacher. Sign up today (tomorrow)!
